Commercial Video Director

Photography stops time at exactly the right moment. Video has to get that same moment right, then keep getting it right for as long as the camera's rolling. High-speed when something's exploding into frame, slow-motion when it needs to be savoured. Coffee beans tumble in close-up. A bottle cap pops off a beer, the spray caught in razor-sharp focus. A box of tic tacs spins in close-up before its lid flips open, dropping two mints into the air.

The same range that runs across the still life, food and drinks photography pages shows up here too, just with movement added: whisky bottles emerging from a haze of smoke, a hand surfacing from a sea of gummy bears to squeeze one between two fingers before sinking back in, a full party table flipping into the air in slow motion as burgers and sweets scatter everywhere like a food fight mid-throw. Nothing holds still long enough to get boring.

Filming this kind of commercial work means solving the same problem a hundred times over instead of once. Every splash, pour or biscuit has to land exactly right, take after take, the same way five raw steaks have to stack perfectly on top of each other without the whole pile toppling. Some of that precision comes down to rigs Paul builds himself. Pneumatic systems designed to drop, throw or fire objects into frame with the same accuracy every single take. It's the same lighting and composition instincts from the photography work, just choreographed across time instead of frozen into a single moment.

Whether it's a product spinning under studio lights or three biscuits hitting a glass of milk at exactly the right second, the goal is the same one that runs through all of Paul's video work: make every second worth watching.
